What do recent Distracted Driving Laws mean to your Workforce

In today’s digital world, distracted driving presents a growing risk, not just for employee safety, but also for your company’s bottom line.

Distracted driving can lead to significant increases in your company’s auto insurance premiums and threaten your ability to retain current staff if they have an infraction.

Traffic violations stemming from distracted driving can significantly inflate your auto insurance premiums.

9 months ago in Ohio, the became law that it is illegal to hold a cell phone or electronic device in your hand, lap or other parts of the body while driving. If an officer sees a violation, they can pull you over.

When the law was first enforced, it was unknown how insurance carriers would treat a distracted driving violation on a Motor Vehicle Report.

Taylor Oswald advised, it may be seen as significantly as a DUI and less like a speeding ticket.  Results have proven so far this year the seriousness of the offense to insurance carriers. Some carriers exclude drivers with this violation. There have even been cases where this is the only violation on a young individual’s Motor Vehicle Report and the individual was excluded.

Because studies have shown that driving distracted can be worse than driving drunk, it is important for employers to understand the serious nature of distracted driving to society, and to your company.

Please discuss this with your drivers.  Let employees know distracted driving can impact their ability to maintain their position.  They may not be aware this includes a violation on the weekend when they are in their personal vehicle.
